The recent £20m bid for Valencia winger David Silva from Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson came as a shock to many. As untill then only Liverpool were in the running for the players signature.

The sudden interest in the player from a club which has more the ample talent in the wings was not only sudden but shocking. Why would a club with players like Nani, Ronaldo, Park & Giggs want to add yet another winger to the squad?

As the newspapers speculated the bid for David Silva was led by the frustration of no Progress in the Berbatov deal, and Ferguson was desperately looking to add to his strike force before the start of the new season.

But this plot has a flaw. Ferguson has repeatedly mentioned that his main priority is not just a attacking player but a lethal finisher. Someone who can play in front of the deadly duo of Tevez & Rooney. A player in the mold of Ruud Van Nistelrooy who is an out and out finisher.

That is why the continuous interest in players such as Huntelaar, Berbatov and recently Thiery Henry as well.

And Certainly David Silva does not fit the bill for those requirements and you can Trust the Scot to be aware of that. Silva is a player who plays on the wings or behind the striker. Both positions in which Manchester United posses ample talent.

The only other possible explanation that comes to mind is that the player was to be brought in as a future replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Although Ronaldo has committed his future to Manchester United, he dint do it very convincingly. All the player said that he will be at Old Trafford for “Atleast one more season”.

It bring about a doubt in the minds of people. Maybe he will leave for Madrid next season and Ferguson wants to prepare for that much in advance like he always does.

Bring in Silva a year before the Portuguese winger leaves so that he can adjust to the Manchester United style of play.

How true this might be we can only guess and wait untill one more season to pass by. But you can be sure that the Ronaldo saga is far from over yet.
