However, CFR 1907 Cluj the Romanian club who made debut in champions league, produced shocker of a result, by defeating AS Roma on their home ground. Panucci scored the first goal of the match to give Roma the lead. Argentinean Juan Culio equalised for Cluj. Juan Culio scored again to secure all three points for Cluj.

Group B

Jose Mourinho’s, Inter Milan side made a winning start with a 2-0 victory over Panathinaikos. Mancini and Adriano scored the goals for Inter Milan. Cypriot club, Anorthosis Famagusta FC made a memorable champions league debut, by holding Werder Bremen for a 0-0 draw. Though Bremen created so many opportunities, they failed to score.

Group C

Barcelona shrugged of their poor form with a refreshing victory over Sporting Club de Portugal. Barcelona took a lead of 2-0 with the goals of Rafael Marquez and Samuel Eto’o. However, Tonel pulled one back for sporting, to put Barcelona under pressure. Xavi with a late goal ensured the victory for the Guardiola’s side. FC Shakhtar Donetsk defeated FC Basel 2-1.Fernandinho and Jadson scored the goals for Shakhtar, while David Abraham scored the consolation goal for FC Basel.

Group D

Athletico Madrid featuring in Champions league after 11 years started their campaign, with a superb victory over PSV Eindhoven. Argentinean striker Aguero scored twice to give Athletico the lead, while Maniche scored the third to complete the tally. Gerrard scored twice as Liverpool hurdled past a scintillating Marseille side. Captain Cana scored to put the Marseille ahead at their home turf. However, Marseille struggled to score further though they dominated the match.
