48 year old Diego Maradona is tipped to become manager of the Argentinian national side in December. Although a national hero after his performance in the 1986 World Cup quarter finals against England, and having received critical acclaim by many as being the greatest football player of all time, he has not had a long stretch coaching a team and the choice to place him in this role less than 2 years before the 2010 World Cup may seem a risky and controversial one.
Some question his ability to keep players disciplined due to his past troubles with drugs in 1994 and his subsequent rehabilitation for alcohol and cocaine addictions on multiple occasions.
21 year old Lionel Messi may not take the news too happily as a result of Maradona’s criticisms of the player as being selfish and arrogant:
“Sometimes Messi plays for Messi. He feels so superior that he forgets his team-mates. It’s Deportivo Messi (a one-man team). If he played with (Sergio) Aguero or (Juan Roman) Riquelme it would be better for him.”
However, Messi has publicly stated that “These were things said in the moment. I know that Diego appreciates me,”
