22 year old Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has received a police caution for common assault after spitting at photographer Lee Simmons’ back as he left a restaurant in London with wife Coleen.
Rooney had been threatened with arrest and being tried in a Magistrates’ court unless he apologised. His caution has been recorded on the police database, although it does not count as a criminal conviction.
A friend of the player said: “Wayne is always happy to pose for pictures and accepts it’s part of the package of being who he is but sometimes he gets hounded and it’s difficult for him.”
Rooney had denied claims that he had spat on the photographer’s back, insisting instead that he had spat on the ground but the saliva on 21 year old Lee Simmons’ back matched Wayne Rooney’s DNA.
Rooney’s initial failure to bring a letter of apology on Thursday morning meant he was turned away. Hopefully, the incident will not stop Rooney from his continuing success on the pitch both for club Manchester United and the England national team.
A police spokesman stated:
“A 22-year-old man attended a central London police station by prior arrangement. He received a caution for common assault.”
