Speculation persists of rifts between Fabio Capello and FA Clubs, with Capello insisting that in the future injured players must have fitness checks by his staff before being allowed to withdraw from their international duties.
This week, Steven Gerrard was forced to undergo an examination by the England squad’s physiotherapist to confirm that his injuries would keep him out of Wednesday’s friendly against Germany. Despite Capello’s insistence that he remains on good terms with the Premier League managers, such acts are unlikely to be looked on favourably by the managers.
Capello has stated that he will “always” pursue the same policy of having England staff confirm injuries in the future:
“We decide to check all the players (to see) if it is possible for the players to recover or not. We have to check, every time, the physical condition of the players.
“We respect the doctors of the club, but I think it is safer for us, every time, to check.
“We have a good relationship with the clubs. I spoke privately with the managers and there are no problems. At the moment the players are injured.
“I was a manager of a club and I understand the managers, but the players at this moment are injured, that is why they are not here.
“We checked Gerrard because he played until the last minute of the game, and we found out he was injured.”
