Gerrard comeback for Champions League match?

It is looking increasingly likely that Steven Gerrard will play in their Champions League group D qualifier match against Marseilles on Wednesday, after his training session on Tuesday.

Gerrard had missed Saturday’s draw with Fulham due to a groin injury he sustained during the previous weekend’s Bolton game.

Manager Rafa Benitez is yet to determine whether Gerrard is strong enough to play the full 90 minutes, although given his determination and his statement that the injury has cleared, it would be a shame for the star to sit out the crucial game:

Speaking to The Telegraph, Gerrard described his hope of getting a second Champions League winner’s medal:

“I’ve got a drive and a hunger to match Istanbul, if not beat it,”

“Obviously Istanbul was mine and the club’s finest hour for a long time. But I don’t just want to milk that final. I think I’d have regrets if I didn’t win anything else.”

“Liverpool belong in Europe…Yes, you have to earn the right to be in it, but our history, the number of cups we’ve won in Europe, it’s our stage, it’s where we want to be.

“We see how successful the club have been. Players before our generation delivered, and fans expect the same of us today.”
