Alan Shearer has stated that he believes Michael Owen’s international career can be revived, even though the striker is out of favour with the England boss Fabio Capello. Owen’s last appearance was as a second-half substitute in their 1-0 defeat against France, but since then has been plagued by injuries. However, the 28 year old was left out of the squad for their friendly against Germany and, as a result, is rumoured to have been left out of the manager’s plans.
As only the fourth England player to have scored 40 goals on international duty, Shearer has argued that Owen should still find a place in the national side:
“On the England front, it’s a difficult one at the moment, though if it were up to me he would be in my squad, there’s no doubt about that.
“But you can’t say anything against the England manager because most of the results he has had have been fabulous.
“But I don’t think Michael Owen’s international career is over.”
