Liverpool skipper Gerrard tells how Torres has ’set the benchmark’ for foreign players

Liverpool star Steven Gerrard has said how Fernando Torres’ move has set the benchmark for future foreign signings, as they will no longer be given the time to adapt to English football given Torres’ 33 goals in his debut season in spite of the suggestions from critics that he would take months to become comfortable in the Premier League.

Speaking to The People he said:

“Fernando has made life tough for the foreign boys who come over to England,”

.”When you look at the impact he’s made in seven months here, it means no-one can make excuses about taking time to settle.

“I actually think England suits him even better than Spain. He suits the constant flow and rough and tumble of the Premier League better than the stop-start, technical La Liga.

“I wouldn’t swap him for any striker playing anywhere at the moment. He’s been massive for us and gives us so many different things up front.”

The interview inevitably ended with Gerrard commenting on Liverpool’s chances of a title win:

“I can understand why people are saying we have title credentials, it is because when we have gone a goal down in games we just haven’t given up. We have managed to turn things around,”

“So now everyone says we have title credentials. That is the sort of pressure I suppose we expect.

“It is nice, but it raises expectations so it is important for us to stay humble.

“We know we are a good team, we know we are getting close to a title challenge. We know we can say that.

“But we have now got to prove we can stay in the race right to the end.

“The longer we go without delivering the title the more the pressure comes. But this is Liverpool, you have to expect that and deal with it. Every single game we play there is pressure to win.”
